unser Lehrbuch:

Vases and faces#

Beschreibung:

Before you begin: Read all the directions for the exercise.

[…]

5 When you get to somewhere around the forehead or nose, you may begin perhaps to experience some confusion or conflict. Observe this as it happens.

6 The purpose of this exercise is for you to self-observe: “How do I solve the problem?”

Begin the exercise now. It should take you about five or six minutes.

Why you did this exercise: Nearly all of my students experience some confusion or conflict while doing this exercise. […] That is the purpose of the exercise: to create conflict so that each person can experience in their own minds the mental “crunch” that can occur when instructions are inappropriate to the task at hand.

Upside-down drawing#

What you’ll need: […] Forty minutes to an hour of uninterrupted time.

Why you did this exercise: […] to experience escaping the clash of conflicting modes—the kind of conflict and even mental paralysis that the “Vase/Faces” exercise caused. (BE_61)

Pure Contour Drawing#

Beschreibung: BE_89 ff

What you’ll need:

  • An alarm clock or kitchen timer

  • About thirty minutes of uninterrupted time

Why you did this exercise: Pure Contour Drawing apparently causes L-mode to “reject the task,” enabling you to shift to R-mode. […] Pure Contour Drawing is one of the key exercises in learning to draw. (BE_93)

Drawing materials#

The materials list for the first two editions was very simple: some inexpensive bond typing paper or a pad of inexpensive drawing paper, a pencil, and an eraser. (BE_13)

For this edition […] I wish to suggest a few additional aids: […]

  • a piece of clear plastic […] Use a permanent marker to draw two crosshairs on the plastic, a horizontal line and a vertical line crossing at the center of the plane.

  • two be-view-finder

  • 2 Folienstife abwaschbar und permanent

Viewfinder / Sucher#

Anleitung BE siehe unten.

Original BE:

Siehe Abbildung 2-1. (BE_13, Übersetzung ChatGPT/JB)

Modified Contour Drawing#

Beschreibung: BE_96

What you’ll need: … [ unseren selbstgebauten Viewfinder / Sucher ]

What you’ll do:

  1. Rest your hand on a desk or table in front of you […]

  2. Try out each of the Viewfinders […]

Anmerkung: Beim modifizierten Konturzeichnen unterscheidet sich das “New Drawing on the Right Side” deutlich von der Erstfassung aus 1979 (DE: “Garantiert Zeichnen lenen, Rohwolt 1982, hier S. 118ff): Betty Edwards verwendet in früheren Ausgaben noch keinen Viewfinder und kommt insgesamt mit weniger Technologie aus. Die Neufassung verwendet deutlich mehr didaktische Hilfsmittel.

This brings us to a crucial question—that is, an all-important question in terms of your understanding: What is drawing?

The quick answer: Drawing is “copying” what you see on the picture-plane. (BE_99)

Beschreibung: BE_127

What you’ll need:
